Who can become a Freemason?
Any man over the age of 18 with no criminal record is eligible for application to the Lodge. You must express a belief in a Supreme Being.
What do you mean belief in a Supreme Being?
All Masons must believe in God, Allah, YHWH, or some other entity who created the universe and everything.
Is Freemasonry a religion then?
No. Freemasonry is a fraternity based around ritual to instill morals and build character. A common definition is “a peculiar system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols.” The ethics taught by Freemasonry are not in contradiction with religious belief, but a compliment to it.
What do you mean by ritual?
Ritual is a set of actions performed the same way each time. If you think about your bedtime routine, it has a ritual around you brushing your teeth. In the case of Freemasonry, these rituals tie us together by a common experience and teach important lessons.
What are the lessons Freemasonry teaches?
The three tenets are Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.
What does Brotherly Love mean?
We teach that all people on this planet were created by the Supreme Being. This makes us one giant family. As family, we are supposed to set aside our differences and work towards making the world a better place for everyone.
What does Relief mean?
By relief, we mean taking care of the unfortunate, the poor, and the suffering. Read more about historical Masonic relief actions. Masons are called to relieve the distressed individually and collectively.
What do you mean by Truth?
We teach men to be of good character. This means keeping our word, telling the truth, and improving ourselves through education and mentorship.
